Why would a child need their spleen removed?
Splenectomy is most often considered for blood disorders such as hereditary spherocytosis and, in selected cases, sickle cell anemia. The decision is made together with your child’s hematologist.
Can part of the spleen be preserved?
In some children a partial splenectomy is possible, which removes the diseased portion while retaining spleen function. Whether this is suitable depends on the underlying condition.
What vaccinations are needed before splenectomy?
Children need specific vaccinations in advance of spleen removal, and ongoing precautions afterwards. The team will give you a written plan and coordinate this with your pediatrician.
